Scuba and SnorklingCatalina Underwater Wonders

Scuba and Snorkeling
Just offshore from Avalon, undulating kelp forests shelter a vast array of life, an ever-changing vista of the diversity to be found in the Pacific. Playful California sea lions frolic, graceful bat rays soar and vibrant garibaldi dart between the kelp's amber fronds. Crystal clear waters reveal giant black sea bass, menacing moray eels and massive schools of mackerel cruising through rays of dappled sunlight while archaic stone crabs, lobsters and Pacific halibut forage on the bottom. Protected from pounding surf by the island itself, Catalina's frontside coves offer an unparalleled opportunity to explore these marine wonders, whether topside and dry or immersed and submerged. However you choose to experience the underwater world, the clarity of the water at Catalina Island is the best in Southern California, with visibility often exceeding 60 feet.
Adventurers who want to get up close and personal with Catalina's underwater wonders have a number of choices. Several companies offer gear rental and guided tours for both snorkelers and scuba divers.

Snorkeling has long been a favorite island activity and can be undertaken by anyone who can swim. Water temperatures usually exceed 70 degrees in the summer and rarely drop below 60 degrees even in the winter. Even so, many who choose to take the plunge opt to rent a wetsuit along with the rest of their gear. Taking the plunge can be as uncomplicated as renting equipment, buying some frozen peas to feed the fish and walking out to the cove. Guided tours of the cove are available through Catalina Snorkel and Scuba. Or, for those looking for a bit more adventure, several companies, including Wet Spot Rentals and Snorkeling Catalina, offer guided tours to secluded island coves.

Whether you're a complete novice or an experienced certified diver, Catalina's fascinating marine life, crystal clear waters and diverse dive sites are sure to be a highlight of your dive log. Chosen as the top North American dive destination by readers of Rodale's Scuba Diving magazine, the island offers an unmatched opportunity for both shore and boat diving. Gear rentals, classes, boat dives and introduction dives are available from dive shops in Avalon. Divers will also enjoy experiencing the Casino Dive Park, the first municipal dive park in the country. Scuba diving can be arranged through Scuba Luv, Catalina Dive Shopor Catalina Divers Supply.
